Stanford University finally opened its doors on October 1, 1891 after its six years of planning and building. Stanford's first student body consisted of 555 men and women and the original faculty that it had of 15 members was expanded to 49 for the second year. The University's first president was David Starr who was previously the president of Indiana, but left that position for Stanford. Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect who created Central Park in New York, designed the physical plan for Stanford University. Today, Stanford continues to expand and their architects attempt to respect the original University plans.
