Current event
A current event that is going on at Stanford is a speech on New Fuel Cell Catalysts. The speaker for this event is Daniel Friebel. He has a PhD in chemistry. During this speech Friebel will talk about how gas prices are rising, making it harder for us to get fuel for our vehicles, but fuel cells can help us since they can generate electricity for super-efficient motors from clean fuels such as hydrogen or methanol. He will explain how bond-breaking and bond-making chemical reactions are facilitated by catalysts and his experiments, combined with quantum chemistry computations done at the Center for Interface Science and Catalysis were used to create a blueprint for a new, highly active fuel cell catalyst that uses very small amounts of platinum in special atomic configurations. We chose this event because it is the nearest event to the time when this was created and because we are interested in fuel cells and alternative energy sources. This is significant because with fuel cells we can reduce pollution and not need to pay huge amounts of money for gasoline for our cars and other vehicles.
